The most scenic part of the Avalanche Lake Trail is actually the beginning, where Avalanche Creek cuts deep into a narrow gorge of red rock. Great overlooks, but careful where you step.

Pack a lightweight rod to Avalanche Lake and bring plenty of dry flies, because it's full of little cutthroat trout.

Avalanche Lake in July, with low water but no shortage of stunning angles on the distant waterfalls. The beach is rocky, but it's a great reward at the top of the hike, and you can walk around the lake.

The Avalanche Lake Trail winds through a thick canopy of cedars, flanked sometimes by the sounds and breathtaking sights of the creek, and sometimes by giant rocks overgrown with emerald moss. Sun peeks in.
