Gabapentin is the generic name for the brand-name medication Neurontin. It is used to help control seizures caused by epilepsy, pain caused by shingles, and restless leg syndrome.

Gabapentin has also been used off label to treat neuropathic pain, hiccups, and fibromyalgia. Gabapentin can be taken with or without food, and usually at the same time every day. Make sure to also inform your doctor and/or pharmacist of all other medications (including over-the-counter drugs and supplements) you are taking in order to prevent drug interactions. Common side effects can include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, memory problems, nausea, and vomiting.
