Need to Know

If you are making a winter ascent on this trail, crampons and an ice axe are pretty mandatory. Grades can be between 40%-50% on the trail.

Description

This is an alternate route to Tuckerman Ravine. It is commonly used as a means to bypass climbing the ravine itself. The trail will take you up to the Lion's Head, a large rock outcrop above Tuckerman Ravine. It then provides a gently sloping trail along the northern rim of the ravine until rejoining with Tuckerman before turning up the summit cone.

Leaving from the Pinkham Notch Visitors Center, follow the Tuckerman Ravine for just over 2 miles until you reach a sign directing you to the Lion's Head Trail. Follow this up several steep sections before the trail mellows out at the rim. Follow blue markers along the rim until reconnecting with Tuckerman Ravine. Turn right towards the summit, and continue on to the top.
