Description
From South Lake Trailhead, start on the well-maintained
Bishop Pass Trail. After about two miles, keep an eye out for the trail junction toward Chocolate Lakes. This turn can be easy to miss, so watch for the sign marking the way.
Once on the
Chocolate-Ruwau Loop Trail, the path gradually ascends, passing by beautiful alpine lakes and offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The trail eventually winds its way past Ruwau Lake before reconnecting with the
Bishop Pass Trail. From there, head back on the
Bishop Pass Trail to complete the loop.
Flora & Fauna
During the summer months, the Chocolate Lakes Loop is abundant with alpine flora, including lupines, Indian paintbrush, and columbines. Keep an eye out for marmots and pikas among the rocks, and be sure to store your food and snacks securely to keep them out of reach of these animals.
