Overview
The Bishop Canal Loop is an area to walk, run, fish, dog walk, birdwatch and more without having to leave the town of Bishop. This is a part of a service road network owned and maintained by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. But they're rarely occupied by vehicles. Mostly, the roads are occupied by townsfolk out for a walk or run, and depending on the season, the odd cow. It sounds pretty boring, but the views are hard to beat. Extend your outing for miles or keep it short: this rural road network offers flexibility, great views, all the while without needing to leave town.
Description
The route as shown here is just one possible example of a run or walk someone can do from the Bishop Canal parking area. The roads are well maintained by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, but you'll likely not see any cars or vehicles on the dirt roads. You'll likely see locals walking their dogs, the odd cow and calf, or a runner on an interval training run.
The route starts by heading south down the valley, away from town out to Gus Casbaugh Lane (another dirt road). The route takes a turn toward the east and faces the White Mountains range. This route turns north at the soonest opportunity on a wide dirt road along another canal. That road turns slowly north-west, winding along a canal, eventually making its way back to the original canal where you began your hike. Turn north and you'll soon be back where you began.
Disclaimer 1: There are few if any signs along this route! If you don't know where you're going, it is recommended to bring a navigation tool.
Disclaimer 2: This route and review was added by a man in his early 30's. The public has open access to these roads, including vehicles. These roads are very rural and at certain hours are largely unoccupied. I have heard from more than one female friend that running alone around dawn or dusk has felt uncomfortable for various reasons. Be safe. Running with friends is better anyways.
