Overview
Cody Peak is a prominent peak in the southern Tetons, seen looming in the distance from the top of the Tram and Sublette ski lifts. Its steep north face is iconic for skiing -- home to some of the most extreme lines in the Tetons. The mountain, part of a glaciated cirque in Rock Springs canyon, can be reached from the top of the Tram. The trail is exposed and 3rd class in some sections, making this hike a true thrill.
Need to Know
The tram is free on the way down, but not on the way up, and closes at 5pm during the summer season. Do not attempt this route in bad weather. Consider starting early.
Description
Take the tram to the top of
Rendezvous Mountain, or if you're looking for a bigger day, hike to the top instead. From the tram, descend the mountain's south ridge (Top of the World trail) down the wide road. The road soon turns to singletrack, and the climb begins at the saddle between
Rendezvous Mountain and
Cody Peak. This first bit up a satellite peak is 3rd class with some high steps. The trail keeps to the mellow side of the mountain as it slowly ascends to the top of
Cody Peak.
Once on top, the views are stupendous. To the south, you can see the adjacent No Name, and Rendezvous peaks. To the east, Jackson Hole extends far north, guarded by the Gros Ventre Range. Idaho's Teton Valley is to the west, and the rest of the Teton Range to the north.
