Overview
Josie's Ridge is a local classic, ascending a sunny, open ridgeline on the western side of Snow King. Its popularity stems from its convenience—close to town, steep, and short—making it a great option for those seeking a quick leg burner with stunning Teton views.
The route described here turns back after the initial summit. If more trail time is in order, continue up the trail to the top of Snow King resort and consider connecting the Summit Trail to
Sink or Swim #4031 to KC Trail back to the base of Josie's Ridge to make it a 5 mile loop.
Need to Know
The hike can be HOT during the summer. Bring sunscreen and water.
Description
Park on Elk Run Ln just behind the big post office. Look for the Russ Garaman Pathway which begins under the wooden arch. The two-lane pedway meanders along Flat Creek. Keep your eye out for moose here. Once across the bridge, find the trail that ascends the mountain just to the right of the trail information sign.
Josie's Ridge Trail at first seems moderate, winding through the sagebrush, then starts to climb. The trail maintains a steep grade as it switch-backs up the ridge. The sun exposed slope becomes wooded about three-quarters the way up. Finally a break from the leg burning switch-backs is found at the top of the ridge.
Enjoy the view's from here, they are some of the best in the valley!
If hiking the 5-mile loop, continue on the trail as it climbs through the forest and then hugs the western ridgeline of Snow King. At the top, locate the Summit Trail just passed the gondola. The trail is a wide road and steeply switchbacks the mountain. After the 5th switchback down, the sign for Sink or Swim appears. Take this trail west (left) across the the north face to the KC Trail. The KC Trail will bring you back to the trail information sign at the base of Josie's.
