Description

Mount Wire is a cool summit over SLC, worth it for the views and for the workout, and maybe for the paraglide launch if that's your thing. There's also a small lookout tower on top, and you can climb into it (at your own risk) for an even better view.

Most people reach the top of Mount Wire summit via George's Hollow Trail which goes past The Living Room. And while that may be the nicer trail, it stays icy/muddy for a lot longer than this south-facing trail. The caveat of the south trail is that it's very steep, going more or less straight up a ridge line. It's unmaintained, rugged, and loose underfoot in some places, making it a bit hazardous in the downhill direction.

So you might take this alternative route if you want a dry hike in the spring or if you want a better burn for hill training. To make a loop with this and the standard trail, I recommend going up this south trail and down George's Hollow, but you can pick your poison.
