Overview

Starting in Cunningham Gulch, this loop spends much of its time on infrequently used trails before connecting with the CDT/CT and finishing with a descent to the Highland Mary Lakes Trail #606 TH.

Need to Know

This loop can be extended by another 10-15 miles by adding the loop that exists to the north of where the route first hits the CDT. This would form a figure 8 by taking the trail straight (instead of turning right on the CDT, onto West Pole Creek Trail) and eventually reconnecting with the CDT further north. Check out TRP to see this option.

Description

This loop starts by climbing the eastern wall flanking Cunningham gulch. This can be accessed by a connector trail by the Cunningham Gulch pit toilet or by using the Cunningham Gulch Trail #502 from the Highland Mary Lakes Trail #606 TH.

This climb is steep, climbing almost 3000 ft before cresting the ridgeline. The trail markings are infrequent, with the occasional cairn, but becomes better when it runs into the CDT/CT. This also marks the end of the steep climbing and descending. Simply follow the CDT to the Highland Mary Lakes Trail #606 to get back to the TH. You'll be rewarded by some easy trail and big views along this stretch.
