Overview

From June through October you can enjoy this moderate hike to see some marvelous and uncrowded alpine lakes. With a wide variety of terrain and several lakes along the way, the Lake Lillian Trail packs a lot into a reasonable distance. The short detour to Lake Margaret is well worth the effort, especially for taking a quick dip on your return route if the day is hot.

Need to Know

A Northwest Forest Pass or equivalent is required for parking.

Description

The trail begins just off of a dirt road; look for a discreet sign with posted trail information. The trail ascends for 2.7 miles through wildflowers and berries, with the occasional view of Keechelus Lake providing more motivation. As you ascend, keep your eyes open for views of Mount Rainier on clear days.

As the trail enters dense old-growth, look for the junction with Lake Margaret Trail #1332.1. This 0.5-mile detour leads down a series of switchbacks to the shores of Lake Margaret. The wildflower meadows here are a perfect spot to rest before you return to the Lake Lillian Trail for the push to Twin Lakes.

The sparkling blue-green color of Twin Lakes is a wonderful surprise as you approach. These lakes are a great spot to turn around if you are short on time or energy, but if you can, try to push on to Lake Lillian. The picturesque, clear water, alpine scenery, and abundance of flat rocks along the shore will have you searching for excuses to linger. As you return to the trail, take a second to find some huckleberries to fuel your hike back. - Description by Andrea Coan, Outdoor Project
