Need to Know
Parking is available after passing through the gate at the national forest boundary. Dispersed camping can be found with the prime locations being near Twelvemile lake or in Sheep Ridge valley as both have access to water.
Description
The first mile after starting at the national forest boundary, the trail meanders through a valley with dispersed camping sites. As the trail banks left and veers into the aspens, be sure to follow the map and avoid the local footpath on the right.
The trail segment until the top of the ridge is the hardest part with rocky and steep terrain. The path remains double wide the entire time and is mostly shaded.
As the trail approaches the ridge, there are a few more dispersed camping spots, though water will be scarce. At the top of the ridge, the trail crosses a forest road, which should be ignored. Once the trail levels off at the ridge, the downhill portion proves significantly easier and smoother.
As the trail heads into the valley, several trail segments have wildflowers and beautiful views will be found through gaps in the trees. Eventually, the trail leaves the trees to open onto Sheep Ridge valley. Continuing along Sheep Ridge valley, the trail will cross a stream and joins up with
Twelvemile Trail (FST 684) .
