Two short trails to two jaw-dropping overlooks in Capitol Reef National Park. At just 0.1 miles to Goosenecks Overlook and 0.4 miles to Sunset Point, you might as well hike both of these together. The vistas are fantastic at any time of day, but Sunset Point is so called for a reason. Get here late in the day for the most rewarding view of all, but be prepared for some crowds.

To get to the trailhead you'll need to drive just shy of a mile down a gravel road. Although certainly passable with any vehicle, there are sections of the road that are quite washboardy and bumpy. Another thing to know is that there are no bathrooms or other amenities at the trailhead.

If you want to be at Sunset Point for sunset, you should arrive with plenty of spare time in order to secure a parking spot. Both trails are fun to do at any time of day though, and you might just have it all to yourself if you can't make it for sunset. Take the short walk to Goosenecks Point first, where you'll gaze over the twists and turns of Sulphur Creek in the canyon below. Next, retrace your steps to the parking lot and join the trail to Sunset Point.

This trail is very gradual in grade with no real gain or loss of elevation. A bench near the midpoint of the trail offers one spot to pause and take in the surroundings. Just a bit farther on is another bench and a flat area atop the point. There's no super clear end to the trail, but you can walk around to explore the entire overlook area, enjoying the huge view across Capitol Reef National Park.

On one side you'll look over Sulphur Creek Canyon toward the westward horizon. On the other you'll find an outcropping of large, flat rocks that are fun to scramble up. From there you'll see a wall of huge sandstone cliffs that contrast beautifully against the impressive Henry Mountains in the background.
