Overview
Twisted Forest is a brief 0.9-mile out-and-back trail winding through ancient Bristlecone Pines, culminating in a breathtaking overlook of Cedar Breaks National Monument. Situated near Brian Head Peak, this scenic hike offers a perfect quick escape, typically taking 40 minutes.
Description
Begin your adventure by parking at the
Twisted Forest Trail. From there, head south from the main parking lot along the clearly marked path. The trail starts with a descent, crossing several streams that flow in the early summer. Upon reaching the bottom of the wash, hike up the steep switchbacks towards the distinctive skyline ahead. While the terrain may be loose and steep, the trail remains well-defined.
As you venture deeper into the landscape of vivid orange-colored dirt, you'll encounter the namesake of the trail: the Ancient Bristlecone pines. These gnarled trees, some over 5000 years old, have been beaten by time, wind and the elements causing a twisted look. Upon reaching the summit, you'll find a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Cedar Breaks, Brian Head, and the Twisted forest behind you.
Here, you may choose to turn back or continue hiking along ridgelines branching off to the left.
Flora & Fauna
Bristlecone pines are the highlight of the trail. These are known to be some of the oldest living things on the planet. A small aspen grove and other trees exist at the beginning of the trail as well.
