The trail will start from Atanwala, a remote village, and to get to the village you would need pickup truck or tuk tuk. The road to the village is narrow and difficult even for a tuk tuk. Take the road as far as possible and you'll see a sign from the forest service. There is a counter where you can purchase a permit for Rs. 125.
Then its stairs all the way. In about 0.5 mile mark you'll see sign board for smallest village in Sri Lanka—Valpalamulla (only one family lives there now). Don't make a right to the village but go straight up. Soon, the large rock stairs become a narrow trail that at times you would have to share with water buffalo (yes they do climb this).
Once you reached the top its flat and open grassland. Hike along the edge of rock and you'll be treated with some stunning views all the way from Kandy as well as Knuckles mountain range. Come back the same way down.
