From the parking lot, the trail descends quickly to Poorman Creek before turning west after half a mile and paralleling the South Yuba River. The trail is mostly high above the river given the somewhat steep sides of the South Yuba River Canyon. Some sections are fairly steep and there is generally lots of up and down.

Noteworthy junctions are with the Missouri Bar Trail at 6.7 miles and the Humbug Creek Trail at 10.1 miles. The latter junction also features a few nice picnic benches. The South Yuba Primitive Campground can be found at 9.7 miles, on a slightly elevated river bank. The South Yuba River can only be accessed in few places and views are surprisingly scarce given the proximity to the river.
