Mountain Biking not recommended or allowed. If you choose to continue up or down stream on the Gila River Trail there are many water crossings, some being swift and deep. Be sure to check conditions if you are continuing on the Gila River Trail. Do not drive Highway 15 if there has just been a winter storm.

Need to Know

Take Highway 15 north out of Silver City for 36 miles. You'll pass the junction with Highway 35 and go over Copperas Pass, where the Clinton P Anderson Lookout is a great place to stop and enjoy the views. There are pit toilets here. After this, the road heads downhill with steep grades. Alum camp is the large pull-off on the left with a big dirt/sand pile in the middle and an educational sign at the western edge. Park here. There is plenty of room for horse trailers but no amenities. Travel up the two-track to a wooden sign labeling the Alum Camp Trail.

Note: Do not drive this road if we just had a winter storm.

Description

Alum Camp Trail #788 is a shorter but steep trail from the Highway 15 down to the Gila River where it connects to the Gila River Trail. A great trail for a hike with amazing views of the canyon down to the river where you can enjoy a picnic under a huge Sycamore tree.

Flora & Fauna

Sycamore trees and willows along the river.
