Description
This hike combines a portion of the Jud Wiebe Memorial Trail with the
Liberty Bell Trail,
Sheridan Crosscut Trail, and Imogene Pass Road to form a 6.5 mile loop. There is a significant amount of elevation change making this a great workout. You'll also have good views along the upper portion of the loop. I'd recommended hiking in a clockwise direction to enjoy the best views while descending.
Begin at the end of North Oak Street in Telluride and follow the gravel road (Tomboy Road) to the right as it ascends slightly. Continue for a short distance then turn left onto the
Jud Wiebe Trail.
You'll stay on the
Jud Wiebe Trail until reaching the
Liberty Bell Trail junction. The route then crosses the Liberty Bell Flats, a beautiful area with aspen trees and a slight reprieve from the steady climb. The climbing soon resumes however, and continues until the very top of the loop.
From the top you'll have great views. These views continue as you find your way over to the
Sheridan Crosscut Trail and begin the steady descent. Some of the best views of the entire route are found along this stretch, with vistas down to Telluride below and
Bridal Veil Falls to the southeast.
Follow Sheridan Crosscut all the way down to Imogene Pass Road, a rocky 4x4 road. Turn right and continue downhill. The road turns into Tomboy Road and leads back to North Oak Street where you started.
