The trail is paved all the way from the Bluebird Barn to the trail terminus on the island, allowing anyone to enjoy the views as you cross the French Broad River.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset daily. They close the gate in the evening and will ticket cars left in the lot, so make sure you are out at sunset.
Need to Know
The only restrooms located in the park are at the Bluebird Barn at the entrance of the park. There is not a proper visitor center, so there is no place to buy snacks or drinks. The trail is exposed, so wear proper sun protection.
Fishing from the bridge is not permitted. Please be aware that water under the bridge is very shallow, diving and swimming are prohibited for your safety. You'll need a valid fishing license if you want to fish in the park.
Description
The Bobwhite Accessible Trail is a .9 mile trail that leads from the parking lot through the heart of the park to the French Broad River where you can cross a bridge and access one of the Seven Islands. Park in the large parking lot and hike past the Bluebird Barn and past the restrooms. From here, the paved trail descend through an open field for a third of a mile.
The trail passes the intersection with the Seven
Island Loop Trail and breaks to the right. Working its way along the edge of the field, the trail passes a seasonal pond as it breaks to the left and approaches the bridge across the French Broad River. There is a slight incline to access the bridge. Take your time crossing the river to enjoy the views of river and surrounding mountains.
At the end of the bridge, the trail gently descends to the island, breaks to the left, and arrives at the end of the trail where there is a bike rack for people to park their bicycles since biking on the island is not allowed. From the end of the trail, you can explore the island, play or fish along the bank of the river, or turn around and work your way back to the parking lot. You can enjoy other trails or simply hike back to the parking lot and your vehicle.
