There is a fee for the Pfingstegg tramway of 18 CHF for adults and less for kids (one-way).
Description
Fantastic hike that was recommended to us by the Grindelwald visitors station and shown on the map they provide. You can either take the Pfingstegg tram to the south side of the valley (which we did) or hike up to the start point.
From the the top of the tram, the trail winds through the forest and then starts to climb up the river valley on the east side of the Eiger. The upper half of the trail is cut through a steep cliff face. There are some guard rails at the areas with the most consequence. If you don't like exposed heights, you'll feel some anxiety but for the entire trail, we felt safe.
The Berghaus Baregg has drinks and food to be eaten indoors or outdoors on their amazing deck. While we ate, we saw an avalanche come down the far side of the valley, off of the Eiger. The trail wasn't very crowded and it felt like a great exposure to the Swiss mountains.
