Since 2017, the section of the Green Gardens Trail from Steve's Cove to Wallace Brook is closed permanently and the entire Wallace Brook trail is closed. Hikers are not to venture to these sections and former trails. The decision was made in the interest of visitor safety.

Need to Know

There is a pit toilet at the trailhead, and one located along the trail before you reach the stairs to the beach near the campsites. Permits are required for camping.

Description

Note that this trail is no longer a loop. The trail was redone in 2017 for visitor safety. The trail begins to the left of the parking lot and first heads through the open serpentine barrens of the Tablelands up a hill. Once you reach the top of this section, the trail is mostly downhill until you reach the end, so keep in mind that you'll need to head back up the way you came.

As you meander down the trail you'll be rewarded with some great views of the surrounding mountains as well as the sea. Once you reach the plateau on the coastal cliff edge you'll pass by the campsites and a pit toilet. The trail will flatten out into lush cliff-top meadows filled with wildflowers (in season). Breathtaking views all around! Stop at the iconic red chairs for a break and either head down to the beach or past the chairs toward Steve's Cove and the end of the trail. You'll see a sign toward the end asking you not to continue along the old trail, and if you do, it is at your own risk.

If you are lucky at picturesque Steve's Cove, you may spot some friendly sheep! After you enjoy your time at Steve's Cove, head back the way you came toward the red chairs and beach. If you'd like, head down the steep ladder-like stairs to the beach for some extra exploration. As you head up from the beach, follow the trail back the way you came back up to the parking lot.
