Cave
Description
The trail can be accessed either from the Upper Picnic Area or from the Lower Picnic Area, which is a shorter hike. Starting at the Lower Picnic Area, the trail climbs gently up the hillside to the first of two caves found along the trail. You can almost see the first cave from the parking lot. This is the larger of the two caves and kids can climb around the opening of the cave.
The trail breaks off to the right and starts to climb steeply up an eroded hillside where roots and rocks help to provide footing and grips as you ascend toward the second cave. The trail levels out briefly at this second cave and provides you an opportunity for you to tae photos or if you are small enough, climb into the opening of the cave. From here, the trail climbs a steep, wooden staircase that emerges at the road that runs through the park.
After crossing the street, the trail goes up another wooden staircase, although this one is shorter. The trail continues through a forest of mature hardwood trees with a high canopy, providing shade for you and the forest below. Leveling out, the trail continues until it meets up with
Lower Picnic Area Trail and the
Park Boundary Trail. If you want to make your way back to your car at the Lower Picnic Area, the fastest way is to turn left and circle back around to your car, saving you having to navigating the stairs and steep hill that you just ascended. If you want to explore more of the park, continue straight on the
Park Boundary Trail or turn right to go to the Upper Picnic Area where you can find connectors to other park trails.
