Overview

The hike from Kamikochi to Mt. Yarigatake in the Japanese Alps is a adventure through big landscapes. Starting in Kamikochi, you'll follow the Azusa River Trail, passing Kappa Bridge and the Taisho Pond. As the trail ascends Yokoo Ridge, you'll be rewarded with big views. Crossing the rocky Dakesawa Valley, you'll reach the Yarigatake Hut, a resting point before the challenging climb to the summit. At the peak, soak in the panoramic vistas of the Japanese Alps.

Description

Begin your hike along the Azusa River Trail, which offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the crystal-clear river. The trail is well-marked and relatively easy to follow.

After hiking for about 2 kilometers, you'll come across Kappa Bridge, a picturesque spot where the trail crosses the river. Take a moment to enjoy the scenery and maybe even spot some kappa (mythical creatures from Japanese folklore).

From Kappa Bridge, follow the trail as it winds along the scenic Taisho Pond. The pond was formed during a volcanic eruption in 1915 and offers beautiful reflections of the surrounding mountains.

After passing Taisho Pond, the trail starts to ascend more steeply as you approach the Yokoo Ridge. The ascent is challenging but rewarding, as you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Once you reach the top of Yokoo Ridge, the trail descends into the Dakesawa Valley. This section can be quite rocky and requires careful footing. Take your time and enjoy the dramatic scenery of the valley.

After crossing the Dakesawa Valley, you'll arrive at the Yarigatake Hut. This mountain hut serves as a base for climbers attempting to summit Mt. Yarigatake. If you plan to continue to the summit, you can rest here and refuel before proceeding.

From the Yarigatake Hut, the final stretch involves a steep and challenging climb to the summit of Mt. Yarigatake. The trail is marked with red paint and requires scrambling over rocky sections.

Once you reach the summit of Mt. Yarigatake, take a moment to soak in the incredible panoramic views of the Japanese Alps. On a clear day, you can see vast mountain ranges and even Mount Fuji in the distance.

After enjoying the summit, carefully descend back to the Yarigatake Hut. From there, retrace your steps along the same trail back to Kamikochi.
