Overview
The Paparoa Track Great Walk is a 55-kilometer trail in New Zealand's Paparoa National Park. Starting at the Smoke-ho car park near Blackball, hikers embark on a remarkable journey through ancient rainforests, subalpine plateaus, limestone karst landscapes, and dramatic coastal cliffs. The track showcases diverse ecosystems, teeming with unique flora and fauna.
Well-maintained huts and campsites offer comfortable resting spots along the way. As hikers traverse the track, they are treated to breathtaking vistas of mountains, valleys, and the turquoise Tasman Sea. Description
From the carpark, the trail gradually ascends through beautiful native vegetation, including ferns, moss-covered trees, and diverse birdlife.
As you continue along the track, you'll encounter numerous stream crossings, which are facilitated by well-maintained bridges and boardwalks. Take your time to appreciate the sights and sounds of the rainforest surrounding you.
After a couple of hours of hiking, you'll reach the first hut along the track, Ces Clark Hut. The hut provides basic amenities such as bunk beds, cooking facilities, and toilets.
Departing from Ces Clark Hut, the trail takes you through a variety of landscapes, including subalpine plateaus and alpine meadows. You'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
The track continues to wind its way through the diverse terrain, with occasional steep sections that require careful footing. Take your time and enjoy the magnificent scenery unfolding before you.
Approximately halfway through the track, you'll arrive at Moonlight Tops Hut. This hut offers another opportunity for rest and overnight stays.
Leaving Moonlight Tops Hut, the trail descends through beech forest and enters a limestone karst landscape. This section is known for its fascinating rock formations and hidden caves, adding an element of adventure to your hike.
As you approach the final stretch of the track, the trail opens up to stunning coastal views. You'll catch glimpses of the turquoise waters of the Tasman Sea and the famous pancake rock formations of Punakaiki in the distance.
The Paparoa Track concludes at the Pororari River car park, near the town of Punakaiki. Take some time to explore the
Pancake Rocks and Blowholes before arranging transportation back to your starting point or your next destination.
