Overview

Strawberry Peak sits in the Polvadera Mountain Chain west of Socorro at an elevation of 7,021'. Its rugged profile and attainable distance makes it an attractive summit to climb from Socorro. This route uses the Socorro SingleTrack for access followed by a cross-country hike over BLM-managed lands for the final summit.

Need to Know

Some routes up Strawberry Peak published elsewhere cross private land or into the EMRTC secure site. Please respect both the secure site and the private land holdings.

Description

Strawberry Peak is a rugged dome on the Socorro skyline. As Socorro Peak (M Mountain) is within the EMRTC secure area, this is the nearest peak to Socorro that is on public land which makes it an attractive destination.

This recommended route follows the Socorro SingleTrack for approximately 4 miles before traversing cross-country through BLM-managed lands for the 3-mile summit approach.

After the maintained singletrack, the route drops into Nogal Arroyo before starting the ascent. Most hikers chose a southern or eastern approach to the summit. The final ascent is very steep and loose, and only recommended for very experienced and fit hikers.

Pack plenty of water and be well prepared for this 14-mile hike.

Flora & Fauna

Elk, deer and big horn sheep are sometimes seen in the vicinity.
