Description

Directions: This hike starts in a small parking lot off El Monte Rd and ends at an intersection with trails of El Monte Park. Follow signs and stay on trail.

After the initial climb of 0.5 miles, take a left at the first tunnel; taking a right and going up hill will bring you to Lake Jennings. The next four miles are nearly flat; if you find yourself climbing for more than a few meters, you've taken a wrong turn. The trail terminates at another tunnel/a trail intersection with the El Monte County Park trails.

This trail is flat and fast, but has a half dozen very steep (although very brief) climbs. It is well-built and clear of brush or major erosion. Views across the San Diego River Valley to the El Cajon Mountains are very good. The trail is mostly exposed and can get very hot during the summer; an early morning run will keep you in the shade due to the orientation of the hills. There are several signs along the way that tell the story of the historic Helix Flume.

Overall, this is a worthy trail destination, especially if you are linking to trails in El Monte Regional Park.
