Description
Starting at the southern terminus of the Red Sandstone trail just north of the dam off NY Rt 56. The blue blazed trail follows the river and descends down to water level with some minor ups and downs and briefly follows the power line right of way. Various points of interests are marked with signs and descriptions.
A little over a mile into the trail there a ravine that was spanned by a bridge and stairs. Currently is a state of disrepair, a bypass is being constructed to the left. The trail works it way up a hill that is marked with canoe carry signs and a couple of switchbacks. Bearing right the trail leaves the woods to follow the power line right of way that overlooks the Sugar Island dam below.
The trail descends to the dam access road and follows the penstock to a gate at the northern terminus of the Red Sandstone trail. The hike can be continued, along the Sugar Island loop trail, that starts at the bridge over the penstock
