Leaving Pheasant Trail, you head on the northern side of the ridge to the south, providing you with ample shade. After about half a mile, views open up to the north as you loop around the ridge.

Black Rail Trail is on the right after two thirds of a mile. From here on, the trail ascends steadily, making a sharp switch back at 0.9 miles. A great picnic area with a bench is at the top of the hill at 1.1 miles. Continue further and loop around the ridgeline again, the descend back into the shade until you reach Pheasant Trail again.
