Description
The parking for this trailhead is in a mowed area on the south side of Randolph Hill Road. The trail starts on the north side of the road and follows a small dirt road (by the barn). Stay left (along the woodline) and connect with the orange blaze (in the woods). The trail crosses over a logging road, and, eventually, into the Ice Gulch Town Forest. It travels past a few small brooks before arriving at
Peboamauk Trail (on the left).
The trail continues its descent to Moose Brook and turns left. Here, the trail reaches the base of Peboamauk Falls. The trail climbs up along the southern wall of the falls to the top. There's a small view spur (on the right) that overlooks the falls. Shortly after passing by
Peboamauk Trail (on the left), you'll reach Fairy Spring.
The route through the gulch is basically a "choose your own adventure" type path. Be prepared to scramble over rocks, crawl through crevices, scale rock walls, or balance and leap atop columns of stone. Completing this gauntlet may be challenging, but rewarding.
Due to the gulch's orientation, many alpine plants grow in this area. One can often see ice, still residing in the depths of the rock crevices. Because of this, the gulch has a much lower temperature than the surrounding area. It's like hiking through a refrigerator.
The trail climbs up to Hunters Pass and ends. The trail continues on as
Cook Path from here.
