Road to trailhead is unmaintained in winter.

Description

About 1.3 miles from the TH there's a side trail, perhaps the very old Deer Ridge trail which runs down the dry ridge towards the old quarry road. That trail runs down the ridgeline through ankle to calf-high salal, kinnikinnick, and oregon grape along w/ various fungii, patridge berry, etc, round (counter-clockwise) the base of a large knob great for looking upvalley.

Eventually you arrive at the old quarry road and can follow that (now a singletrack) back to the parking lot. Along the quarry road at that point a line of manzanita in bloom. This side trail is about 2 miles total. No other people, just grouse, juncos, etc.

Note that the ridgeline heading south from 1.3mi from TH, and the old quarry road are clearly visible in satelitte views.

Flora & Fauna

grouse, juncos, etc and manzanita, salal, oregon grape, etc
