Need to Know

This trail provides an alternative parking location for hikers traveling to McAfee Knob (the McAfee Knob trailhead is often very crowded). The Greenway also provides thru-hikers a connection to the Catawba community farmers market and post office.

Description

The Catawba Greenway trail begins in farm fields at Virginia Tech's Catawba Sustainability Center. There are orange blazes marking the trail. Beginning at the Sustainability Center and traveling clockwise, hikers will follow an old paved road until the trail turns to a singletrack. The trail climbs up the ridgeline connecting to the AT and McAfee Fire Road. Hikers can then opt to travel to McAfee Knob via the AT or make a loop as shown on this recorded route. If hikers make a loop, they will cross Route 311 twice (first near the McAfee Knob trailhead and again once they return to the valley) - use caution when crossing.
