Description

This steep trail will lead you up 4,000 feet from Kern Canyon to Lightner Peak. The trailhead is just a little east of the Remington Hot Springs parking area and immediately starts ascending relentlessly.

As you make your way up, enjoy views of Kern Canyon and the Kern River. You'll get a short downhill stretch after 1.5 miles as the trail contours the ridge but the real ascent starts now. The trail zigzags steeply up the ridge right in front of you. Most of the trail is very exposed with few opportunities for shade.

You reach the northern end of the ridge at about 4 miles. Lake Isabella is clearly visible to the north and a large valley is straight ahead to the east. The trail now follows the top of the ridge until you get to Lightner Peak.

The peak itself is covered in trees and the trail does not go all the way to the top, it just skirts the peak and then starts descending again towards Lightner Flats. Reach a National Forest Road and the end of the trail at 7.5 miles.
