Need to Know
Part of this trail is within Shore Acres State Park and part within Cape Arago State Park. The signed northern trailhead for this trail is on the east side of the Cape Arago Highway about 0.6 miles south of the entrance to Share Acres Gardens. Its signed southern trailhead is at the end of the highway on Cape Arago, near the group campsite.
Description
The chief attraction of this trail is the opportunity to hike under a soaring canopy of Sitka spruce in an Oregon coastal forest. From the northern trailhead, follow an old doubletrack road on a gradual climb past an old World War II radar site for about a mile to the trail's high point on a ridge crest.
Shortly before the high point, the old road will become a singletrack trail. You'll soon pass an unsigned junction with a use trail going south to views from Arago Peak. The pack trail descends through five switchbacks, crosses a creek, and ascends through six switchbacks before going gradually down, past a group campsite, to its end at the end of the Cape Arago Highway.
