Description
The CAP trail was designated as a National Recreational Trail and will eventually be the second longest trail in Arizona, behind the AZT, at about 336 miles in length. This segment is a flat, wide, elevated dirt road that runs alongside the CAP canal beginning on from a new trailhead completed in May 2021 that lies north of Tangerine Road, just east of I-10, all goes all the way up to the Pinal County line.
Being a dirt road this is a non-technical trail and nearly pancake flat. What is unique is that it's located about 12-15 feet on average above the CAP canal so you have a view of the water nearly the whole time and the elevated trail offers mountain views in nearly every direction too, from the Tortolitas, Picacho Peak, to the Owl Head Buttes while heading north. Mileage shown here is just the out section, so plan for double miles if doing an out and back.
It's totally exposed to the sun being on the elevated berm, with no tree cover at all and completely open to potentially gusting winds. It's in sight of I-10, particularly at the beginning, but it's not a distraction at all. There's a very large parking area that can accommodate a number of vehicles & horse trailers.
Flora & Fauna
Probably very few animals will be seen on this trail.
