Description
This 1.3 mile out and back trail begins at a gated access road at the end of Cold Springs Road in Appplachia. NOTE: There is no parking at the trailhead.
The trail follows the graveled road and is relatively easy hiking for the first 0.5 miles. At approximately 0.65 miles you come to a powerline clear cut. The road forks here. Take the right hand, yellow-blazed fork uphill. You'll head uphill and reach a gap at 0.75 miles. Look for double blazes indicating a turn back and steeply uphill to the right.
You'll then reach the powerline clearing again. The trail turns left and follows the power line clear cut. The trail will then descend into a gap and then right back uphill to the ridgetop. Just after a mile you'll find a sign indicating the trail continues straight ahead and downhill. This is an "unofficial" extension of the trail downhill to the Powell River Trail.
This description does NOT cover that portion of the trail. Turn to the right and climb the steep trail to the ridge top. The trail, still yellow-blazed, enters the woods on the north side of the ridge here. The trail turns downhill for a short stretch but will turn back up hill over the quarter mile and you'll reach the powerline clearing and the overlook. The trail is then back the same route.
