Variation in landscape, pastures with grazing sheep and horses
Description
Perfect flatland scenery, where foggy weather is a bonus. Be prepared for muddy track conditions in some short segments.
This 6.8km hike is an easy hike in the immediate rural surroundings of Bruges. Starting point is the Church of Ver-Assebroek (Pastoor Verhaegheplein), where you can park your bike or car.
De route is maintained by provincial authorities and marked by hexagonal signs with green text that reads "Meersen Wandelpad". Just follow the arrows. It takes you along swampy forests and fields interspersed by creeks and pollard willows -- typical of this part of the lowlands.
The track can get slippery and muddy, giving you a chance to experience the fertile clay ground up close ;) You'll see the hospital complex of Saint Lucas before you enter a residential area, and then pass a bit closer as you hike on a bike path that was a former railway road.
Sheep and horses will stare at you as you make your way back to the starting/end point of the hike. In a bistro called "Het Leenhof" you can replenish the calories you have burnt.
