Need to Know

Most of the trail leads through an area devastated by the 2008 American River Complex Fire. Routing may deviate from your map.

Description

This trail is only for very experienced hikers as it descends 2,500 feet in about 2 miles. Some sections of this trail are very steep. On the upside of hiking through a burned river gorge, you get quite a few great views of the gorge. Head north from the trailhead over a few sandy ridges until the gorge opens up in front of you.

The descent starts here. The trail zigzags quite a bit, but even then the gradient is very demanding. The first half mile is still moderately shaded, but the trees are more and more burned as you make your way down. Reach the American River Trail after 2.3 miles.
