Description
Looking west from the bridge across the lake's spillway, the trail starts into the woods across a small field. A wooden post with a green "3" marks the beginning. The trail begins with a long gradual climb into the Sarah Lincoln Woods Nature Preserve.
After cresting the hill, the trail drops more quickly down into a valley that eventually leads to the lake. The steeper gradient on the downhill has created some large washed out sections, and once into the valley the trail uses the creek bed in some short sections.
Unless there was a bunch of rain, it's likely that you can pass through with some careful steps, but boots are recommended over sneakers. Aside from that, the trail is wide and well maintained. There are two trails/fire lanes that split off of
Trail 3, but there is a wooden signpost at each to mark the direction of
Trail 3.
Once
Trail 3 terminates at the
Lake Trail, turn left to return to the starting point near the bridge in another 0.3 miles for a total hike of about 1.6 miles.
