The Skulls Gap Trail follows the old route of Whitetop Road (Route 600). At the start is a large parking lot with plenty of parking. This makes it a good starting points for large groups.

This mostly dirt and shale singletrack easily climbs to the top of Iron Mountain. With few obstacles along the way it makes for an easy access to the top, without crossing or using any roads. At its terminus with the Iron Mountain Trail is one of the few water sources along the Iron Mountain Trail.
