Overview

The best parts of this hike are the three overlooks. The first is along a short cliff section around a mile in. This overlook provides views of Hiram Village. The cliff section is the most technical part of this climb. It provides a challenge without being strenuous. The second overlook is more expansive and looks south down the Saco River and Baldwin to the east. The final overlook is the best of the three. This overlook looks to the east again but also provides views of the White Mountains to the west.

Description

The route begins after crossing the railroad. The trail climbs for a short period before splitting. Turning right takes you along a well-traveled path that starts level but begins to climb shortly after. The trail climbs up to a ridge that provides some views.

After this ridge, the trail turns sharply a climbs steadily for about a quarter of a mile. After this climb, there is a nice lookout and the trail continues flat for a short period. The trail then climbs quickly to its highest point where the final lookout is located. It then descends slightly and turns sharply.

The trail is then flat for about half a mile. Following this, the trail descends quickly—at the bottom it changes to a snowmobile trail that continues flat all the way back to where the trail originally split.

History & Background

The mountain was not owned by the town of Hiram until 2018 when a local bought the land and donated it. Before this the land was restricted by private ownership. Some of the mountain, including the true summit, is still owned privately.
