Need to Know

$5 parking fee, or Idaho Parks pass ($10 in-state, or $40 out-of-state)

Description

Park at the Indian Cliffs parking area, paying the parking fee, and start up the trail near the parking lot entrance (the trail at the back is a fire trail, not the hiking trail.) Continue through the trees to where the trail splits, immediately after a small plank bridge over an idyllic stream. Take either branch, as both will lead to the top of the cliffs.

The trail winds up with moderate inclines, passing trees and rocks, to the top of the cliffs, where you'll find a beautiful view over the south end of Lake Coeur d'Alene, known as Chatcolet Lake. If you look south across the lake, you'll see old iron railroad trestles cutting through the hills, which are still in use. Looking east will bring you a view of where the Saint Joe River far out into the lake through a channel grown thick with willows and cotton woods, where it finally ends in the middle of the lake.
