Overview
Great loop featuring a good amount of singletrack, starting/finishing at the Top of the Range Tearooms. Heads down to Camels Hump, back up the Macedon Ranges Walking Trail (MRWT) to Major Mitchel lookout, up to the Memorial Cross, back down steep track to the MTWT, then up forest roads back to the tea rooms.
Need to Know
Top of the Ranges Tearoom is at the top carpark. Toilets and water at the top, and at Camels Hump parking.
Description
Start in the main car park at the top of Mt Macedon. Hike back down Cameron drive just outside the gate for the parking loop, and then cut down right on the gravel road (Francis Road). Keep hiking downhill, past an old pine plantation on the left, joining onto Clyde Track (gravel road) and following this through generally flat terrain until it meets up with Cameron Drive again, where you turn right.
About 50m down Cameron Drive, there is an unlikely looking opening in the bush and grassy doubletrack leads in a nice relatively flat loop until it pops back out on Cameron Drive again. Continue down Cameron Drive on the large grassy roadside area until the Camels Hump parking area, where you cross over the road.
At this point don't head up Camels Hump but keep left and head onto the Macedon Ranges Walking Trail which heads back up the hill to the top. This section is amazing singletrack, generally not too steep (apart from a couple of sections) and winds through beautiful bush on a reasonably good track surface.
As you near the top don't forget to pop out right to the overlook to get amazing views over the plains, then continue up towards the Memorial Cross, but drop down on a walking track on the right, about 100m before the actual cross.
This track descends very steeply down the Macedon Ranges Walking Track to the bottom and head left where it joins Hood Track (gravel road). Now at the bottom, it's time to grind back up to the top again!
Head on undulating gravel road (Hood Track) in quite nice bush until you meet up again with Francis Road/Clyde Track intersection again. Turn left and push push push back up the steep gravel road the way you came down in the first km of the trail, back up to Cameron Road and left to the carpark.
After that last hill you'll be about ready for an ice cream and coffee from the Top of the Ranges Tearoom!
