With New Belgium at the beginning there is a great place to grab a beer after. If you would prefer a local craft beer (New Belgium is no longer a craft brewery nor is it any linger employee owned) check out Wedge Brewing along the RAD or Archetype on Hayward.

There are several dog parks along this stretch so if you bring your fluffy one there will be plenty of places to get off leash and frolic.

The unpaved stretch is where the homeless go to camp out. If this makes you skittish or all of the trash along the river makes you boil, perhaps another route is for you.

This is a generally flat trail along the river on the west side. Starts just north of New Belgium Brewing. The trail is paved along New Belgium but then turns to an unmaintained dirt trail for about half a mile before beginining to hit a series of parks, several dog parks, and being mostly paved through that stretch to the end.

Asheville has ambitious plans for their greenways, on each side of the river and I expect over time this will become a stretch that can be looped with the other side for more significant distances.
