Overview
Come to Watermelon Pond Wildlife Environmental Area if you're interested in a leisurely stroll through a mixture of tall loblolly pine and reclaimed Florida prairie. This area has been used for different purposes in its past, but now provides an oasis for local animals to live and thrive. Throughout your time in the area keep your eyes peeled for a variety of birds and small mammals.
Need to Know
Watermelon Pond has a decent parking area, but keep in mind that its soft dirt-and-sand surface may pose problems to low-clearance vehicles.
Description
From the parking area, the trail heads west to quickly reach a junction with the
Fox Squirrel Trail. At this point the hike embarks on a set of two loops organized into a "figure 8". Starting on the
Fox Squirrel Trail, the scenery takes on a mixture of dense pockets of loblolly pine and open swaths of grassland. Upon reaching the junction with the
Blue Heron Loop, expect similarly beautiful scenery to the first loop!
Flora & Fauna
You can expect to see rolling grassland, tall loblolly pines, and the occasional small furry critter while in this area.
