Overview

Starting at a beautiful alpine lake set amidst a pine forest and soaring Dolomite peaks, this is a thrilling opening to Alta Via 1. The Alta Via 1 traverses the Dolomites, rewarding hikers with stunning views of mountains, alpine lakes, wildlife and rifugios as they make their way through the Dolomites toward Belluno. There is also some historical significance to appreciate as you navigate several roads constructed and used during WWI.

Description

The trail is generally well-marked. Start out from the parking lot in front of Hotel Lago di Braies (be aware that multi-day parking at the parking lot with surveillance is pretty costly, and should be paid at the hotel reception to get day rates instead of hour rates—the latter being ridiculously expensive.)

The trail is well-marked and follows a series of trails and old roads through the Dolomites. Enjoy expansive vistas, views of mountains, cliffs and lakes. Wildlife is abundant and you'll likely see numerous birds, deer or even some form of goat as you hike along.

While the Alta Via 1 does technically have 11 stages, you can plan to follow it however you like. The numerous rifugios along the way offer plenty of sleeping opportunities, but as this is one of the most popular treks in the Dolomites, it would be wise to plan your trek and book your stays in advance.
