Need to Know
If you are new to the area, do not miss a visit to Fallingwater.
Description
The Black Loop is the longest loop in Bear Run Nature Reserve. There is nothing overly difficult, but there are some rocky sections, a couple of steep inclines, and a few river crossings. The trail is mostly singletrack in wooded areas but there are some doubletracks and logging roads. A portion of the trail offers great views of the Youghiogheny River.
The trailhead is at the Barn at Fallingwater. The trail is sparingly blazed with black metal plates. Not all turns are blazed, so navigation can sometimes be tricky.
There are other trails in this trail systems, covering over 20 miles. Camping is allowed only in the 5 official primitive camping sites. There is no fee but the campsite must be reserved online. Water is plentiful in this park. Fires are restricted to the camping areas.
Flora & Fauna
Bear Run Reserve provides habitat for black bear, fisher, bobcat, and over 50 bird species. Dominant trees include tulip tree, red maple, chestnut oak, American beech, sugar maple, black cherry, and rhododendron.
