Need to Know
A small parking area is available where the Appalachian Trail crosses 873. Additional parking is available across the Lehigh at the A.T. parking lot, and at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center. It's a steep climb up the Appalachian Trail southbound to reach the North trail. Another option is to go up Translator Lane off Mountain Road. It ends at the top of the mountain near the cell and radio towers. BUT, if you don't have a 4WD with high clearance, park in the parking lot just off Mountain Road and walk up.
Description
The first half mile is a steep climb but then flattens out for the remainder. It's a more scenic alternative to the Appalachian trail which runs parallel. There are many open views of the Lehigh River valley along the length of the trail.
Flora & Fauna
The old zinc smelting operation killed off most of the vegetation on this hillside. The vegetation has been recovering in recent years and mostly contains grass, brush, and small trees.
