Short loop on flat trails with lots of forest to explore and options to shorten the hike.
Overview
Not an extreme hike by any means, this option at Lamoreaux Park links a few trails into a lollipop loop for a beautiful, easy stroll through the forests and marshy areas along the Grand River. As the trails can be traveled in any direction, this track can be adapted to accommodate groups of varying abilities or other time constraints.
A much shorter option is an out-and-back to the viewing platform by the river for around a half-mile roundtrip.
Need to Know
So close to the river, this area can be buggy and flood in the wetter months of the year. Fall and winter can be much drier and free of bugs.
Description
From the trailhead parking area off Coit Ave NE, head west on the natural-surfaced trail, staying left at the first intersection to head to the River Overlook deck. Enjoy this clear vantage point of the river before continuing north through some small clearings to rejoin the
Main Loop Trail.
Turn left (north) onto the main trail through some wetland areas, staying left at all intersections to explore the outermost trails. As this area is prone to flooding, you may need to use an alternate trail or simply backtrack along the same route.
In the northeast corner of the park, the
Wetland Loop adds around 0.4 miles, which can be bypassed by staying on the
Main Loop Trail.
