Overview

It's no surprise that the main attraction in Rocks State Park is the King and Queen Seat and the adjacent scenic overlook at the east end of the park. However, many visitors don't venture beyond this stretch of the Red Trail to explore the full potential of the White Trail.

This loop hike starts from the southern parking area at the Visitor Center and makes the climb to the north onto the White Trail up and over the ridge before returning along the eastern boundary for a rewarding visit to the King and Queen Seat. This route is one of the more challenging as it requires some elevation gain so it may not be the easiest for families who could use the Rock Ridge Picnic Area for closer access.

Need to Know

Long weekends during warmer months can be very busy, plan accordingly by getting to the park early or waiting for a weekday.

Description

From the main parking area near the Visitor Center off Rocks Chrome Hill Road, head northeast along the road to find the White Trail. Though this loop can be traveled in either direction, this loop heads clockwise to start with a more gradual grade and ascent, keeping the reward of the King and Queen Seat for the end. If you're short on time or looking for a more strenuous hike, head right for the direct climb to the scenic overlook.

Continuing on this loop in the clockwise direction, head past the Red Trail access at the top of the ridge and descend along two switchbacks toward the Blue Trail, staying right (east) on the White Trail.

Follow the contours of the ridge to the northeast along a narrow peninsula of land above the Wilson's Picnic Area. Head back along the eastern boundary of the park, still on the White Trail, for the final climb toward the King and Queen Seat and overlook. Expect more visitors in this area and be careful if you choose to scramble around the rocks. That said, the viewpoint is not to be missed. Keep your eye out for rock climbers as this is a popular climbing location.

After taking in the sweeping view, continue south along the White Trail toward the starting point and main parking area.
