Family Friendly A wide, flat multi-use trail, great for the entire family.

Park is closed from dusk to dawn.

Overview

The Vulcan Trail is a paved and crushed gravel multi-use path that is popular with walkers, runners, and bikers. The path is part of a
plan to develop a larger trail network in the greater Birmingham area with the goal of connecting Birmingham's outdoor spaces.

Description

The Vulcan Trail runs east to west from Vulcan Park to Red Mountain Terrace Street. Starting on the east side from Vulcan Park (where this is a slightly bigger parking area), you can choose to explore the area around the Vulcan Statue and Vulcan Museum. There are some nice views overlooking downtown from this vantage point.

The path is wide and alternates between sections of pavement and crushed gravel. As a multi-use trail, you'll need to be aware of other users as the path is popular with joggers, walkers, families, bikers, and people with dogs. The path heads through the woods and is nicely shaded most of the year by the tall trees that line the path. In the spring, you may spot wildflowers in the underbrush, and the fall will add a nice splash of color to the scenery.

While an out-and-back of the full trail will result in a 4-mile round-trip hike, you can also choose to shorten the hike by turning around at any point and retracing your steps.
