Need to Know
Accessing Bald Head Island requires a boat or a ferry pass ($23). The island is carless and most folks get around on bikes or golf carts.
Description
In general, the trail doesn't seem heavily used. As such, there's some downfall along the way, but you feel like you're going through some of the most pristine wildlife area on the island.
To access the trail, you go from the
Loop Trail to gain the ridge that runs through the middle of the island. The trail is marked by large, ancient live oaks and plenty of palmettos. There seemed to be plenty of birds and other critters along the way. Stay left at the relatively faint intersection with the
East Trail and finish up on the road.
Flora & Fauna
Some of the tress include live oak, laurel oak, wild olive, American holly, yaupon, and catbrier. Some other plants include ebony spleenwort. Cabbage palmetto. Birds include Carolina wrens, cardinals, and painted buntings. Catbirds, towhees, blue jays, and 22 species of warblers migrate through in the fall.
